Overview of Wedge Wire Screens

Wedge wire screens, also known as profile wire screens, are precision-engineered filtration and separation products designed for demanding industrial environments. Their unique construction ensures exceptional strength, non-clogging performance, and precise slot openings that are consistent across the entire screen surface. These screens are widely used in water intake, wastewater treatment, food processing, mining, chemical processing, and many other industries where reliable liquid/solids separation is critical.

The manufacturing process involves winding a triangular or wedge-shaped profile wire around a series of support wires. The continuous slot opening created by this design allows for efficient flow while effectively retaining solid particles of a specified size. The V-shaped opening prevents particles from becoming wedged, reducing clogging and facilitating easy cleaning.

Wedge wire screen is constructed using surface profiles and support profiles. The profile wire is typically triangular in shape, while the support wire can be triangular, round, flat, or wedge-shaped, providing robust structural integrity and precise slot control.

Materials and Construction

Wedge wire screens are available in a wide range of materials to suit different operating conditions. Common materials include stainless steel grades 304, 304L, 316, 316L, and 904L, as well as duplex stainless steels, Hastelloy, Inconel, Monel, and other special alloys. The selection of material ensures excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and longevity even in harsh chemical or high-temperature environments.

Material: Wedge wire screen is supplied in stainless steel and other special steel metals and alloy metal screens, including but not limited to 304, 316, 316L, 2205 duplex, and titanium, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of process fluids and temperatures.

Wedge Wire Screen Types and Configurations

Wedge Wire Screen Types:

Panel shape wedge wire screen – used in vibrating screens, dewatering screens, and sizing applications.

Cylinder shape wedge wire – ideal for rotary screens, drum screens, and centrifugal filter applications.

Wedge wire grids – custom fabricated support grids for filter media, laterals, and underdrain systems.

Wedge wire screen sieves – precision sieves used in laboratory and industrial particle sizing.

Additional configurations include sieve bend screens, lateral screens, hub and header systems, and filter nozzles. Each type can be manufactured to exact customer specifications regarding slot size, wire thickness, open area percentage, and overall dimensions.

Key Applications Across Industries

Applications of wedge wire screen
Liquid / Solids Separation: Solids removal from process wastewater; Lake and river water intake screens; Fiber removal; Screen cylinders for rotary screens; Recovering solids; Pulp thickening; Heavy media recovery; Product dewatering; Sieve Bend Screen surfaces. Sizing, Straining and Filtering: In-line strainers to minimize the loss of media; Resin Traps used as an effluent strainer; Sizing of solids; Pressure screens; Filtering particles from treated fluid; Strainers for pump or compressor protection. Collection: Support grids for uniform fluid collection in media filter; Hub lateral screen systems; Header lateral screen systems; Collection of treated liquid in treatment vessels; Filter nozzles for tube sheets; Upflow Clarifiers; Gravity filter underdrain systems. Retention: Retaining media and collecting the treated liquid; Carbon retention screens in carbon-in-pulp tanks; Flooring for germination, malt kiln, grain drying rooms; Catalyst retention in catalytic reactors; Fish protection / diversion screens.

Beyond these core applications, wedge wire screens are also employed in hydrocyclones, centrifuges, belt presses, and as retention screens in anaerobic digesters. Their durability and precision make them a preferred choice for industries requiring consistent separation efficiency and low maintenance.
